Objective
A mailix customer wanted a way to integrate a countdown widget for email into his emails that would also work on Apple devices with the Mail Privacy Policy (MPP) enabled. Until now, it has not been possible to display these timers correctly, which limited the effectiveness of time-critical campaigns. mailix has now developed a configurable countdown widget for email that works reliably despite the Apple MPP being enabled.
The main issue was to ensure that the countdown widget for email was displayed even when Apple Mail’s privacy policy was enabled. Apple MPP loads external content onto the device at the time the email is downloaded. This means that the countdown timers use the time of receipt, not the current time, when the email is opened.
We began with a comprehensive examination of the Apple MPP and its implications for loading external content in emails. We developed a solution that ensures devices with MPP enabled update the countdown widget for emails when they are opened. The countdown timer is preconfigured when the email is created and embedded as a static element that is updated dynamically when the email is opened
Our strategy relies on a combination of server-side calculation and client-side adaptation. The end time of the countdown can be set exactly when configuring the timer or passed dynamically as a parameter. The dynamic end time allows you to specify a calculation based on the time the email is sent or pass the time from the recipient data using personalisation variables.
In terms of content, we have integrated three different design variants to meet our customers’ varying aesthetic requirements. Each variant can be adapted to the customer’s specifications. This includes the selection of fonts, colours and background images. In addition, over 20 design variants can be activated if required.
We have tested the countdown timer extensively to ensure it is displayed correctly on all common email clients and devices. We have paid particular attention to compatibility with Apple Mail. We have also developed a user-friendly interface that allows our customers to easily configure the countdown widget for email and integrate it into their email campaigns.
